A selection of RNZAF Hudson photos from the collections of Robert E. Montgomery and John Regan. Originally intended for possible inclusion in "Classic Warbirds No.8 - Pacific Twins", lack of space ment that only two were published.
Caption from "Classic Warbirds No.2 - Pacific Twins". No.3 Squadron Hudsons over Guadalcanal in early 1943, before the fuselage roundels gained blue centres. Wing roundels are already Blue/White/Blue above and below. This would appear to match the Insignia Blue of the markings as supplied. Camouflage is (NZ) Blue Sea Grey and (NZ) Foliage Green. Undersides would most likely be (NZ) Duck Egg Blue, or possibly (NZ) Sky Grey. No.3 operated RB-34s for a short period before reverting to the trusty Hudson. F/O McCormick piloting a Hudson, achieved the RNZAF’s first ‘kill’ in the Pacific when he caught a Japanese floatplane by surprise and shot it down, into the sea on 3 April 1943. Caption from "Classic Warbirds No.2 - Pacific Twins". With the arrival of the PV-1 Ventura, the Hudson was quickly dropped back to training and support roles. Hudson Mk III NZ2035 ‘SJ-F’ served with 1 Squadron in New Zealand, June 1943. John Regan collection
