Lancaster B.I HK554 came to 75 Sqn squadron 2 May 1944 and destroyed a Focke Wulf 190 on an operation to Stuttgart 26 July 1944. Lost both ailerons, the navigator's sextant and maps whilst taking violent evasive action over Russelheim on the 26 August 1944. Recoded 'Z' by 23 November 1944, presumably after returning to squadron after repair work.

(Details from “Forever Strong” – Norman Franks, “Bomber Squadrons of the RAF” and ORBs.

Notes: de Havilland propellers, late nose-blister style, but early pitot head position. Chaff-dispenser chute, bulged bomb-bay doors, no H2S and unusual serial code, with letters above numbers.

The accompanying photos are scanned from Ron Mayhill’s excellent book “Bombs on Target”. He and his crew flew many of their missions with this aircraft.

They show AA-U after 47 operations.

Believed to have joined 75 Squadron on the 25 March and damaged a Junkers 88 on an operation to Stettin, 17 August 1944. Made a total of 48 operations before being written off on an air test.

Lancaster B.III AA-U ND782. Notes: de Havilland propellers, H2S fitted, late nose-blister and pitot head, chaff-dispenser chute. Ian Wallace collection.
